MVPs, YouTube and Cohorts

The Weekly Variable

The Weekly Variable

Stressful start to the week, but finding a good rhythm.

It’s a relief but also a challenge to switch from a single goal to multiple projects again.

But I’m excited to finally make progress on something I’ve been planning for a while.

Topics this week:

Built a Backend

Last week I was struggling with getting an app testable on iOS, not even trying to go live with it on the App Store yet, but after waiting a while and an extra submission attempt, I was finally able to get a build available in TestFlight, which means the team was finally able to signup and create some real data, not the test data I’ve been using for more than a month.

Wave is nearly a real thing!

There should be a marketing push this weekend and into next week to start talking to real users, and hopefully going live with the app in the a few weeks.

The MVP is almost done.

After more than a month of a 7+ hour daily grind, I’m able to deprioritize app development back to only a couple hours a day, and not my entire day.

I’m sure there will still be the occasional long day, but much more manageable going forward.

Excited to focus back on my automation plans from the beginning of the year.

But I did enjoy getting to build out an entire app from scratch.

It was a great refresher on full-stack development, and a chance to get much more comfortable with React Native.

I think app has a lot of potential so I’m looking forward to it paying dividends in the future.

More to come on the app but now on to automation.

Supabase Custom Domains

But first, authentication is still a pain.

It took a while to get the initial authentication flow to work properly when I first started working on the backend for the Wave app.

I was finally able to setup Google Sign-In so you can use your Google account to sign-up or sign-in rather than having to enter a username and password, but it had “supabase.co” as the website you were logging into rather than website for the app, https://www.thewavenightlife.com/ (and the original app name was “pulse”).

One evening this week, after a lot of trial and error with Supabase Authentication settings, ChatGPT messages, and Perplexity searches, I finally found a video for the setting I was looking for, buried in the general settings of Supabase and not under the Authentication section for some reason...

Of course, using a custom domain for authentication was a $10 “plug-in” which seemed a little ridiculous but hey gotta make your money somehow and I’m sure it’s not an easy service to maintain.

$10 later though, I finally has a properly branded authentication prompt with “Wave” and “thewavenightlife.com”

I did my best to take some notes afterward to remember the process so next time I need to update Google authentication prompting, I’ll know what to do.

If you want the specifics, let me know!

It’s Alive!

I promised a YouTube channel link a few weeks ago, and like many things I mention in this newsletter, there was a good chance it was going to be the last time I ever referenced whatever that idea was.

But not this time!

The jaypetersdotdev YouTube channel finally has some videos on it.

4 whole videos to be exact!

In typical overthinking fashion, I decided to use my personal brand channel rather than creating a business branded YouTube channel.

I feel like I can be a little friendlier and a little more informal this way, but still provide value.

I may eventually sprinkle in more personal or off topic videos on this channel if the automation tutorials do take off, but automation tutorials are the focus for now.

The goal is to get a tutorial video out every day for at least 30 days to build momentum and hopefully get some stats to work with.

There’s only 4 so far because I need to wrap up this newsletter and get today’s video done, but I’ve been pleased with the progress so far.

Starting to get in a good rhythm.

If you happen to check them out, or if you happen to have any n8n tutorials you’d like to see, let me know!

Automating Automation

With 4 videos under my belt, I’m already spotting areas for improvement in the rough recording process I’ve developed this week.

There’s a real opportunity to create a nice feedback loop.

Several steps in creating and publishing a YouTube video could be automated, which I could then create a video about automating that process of creating YouTube videos and double up on topics and valuable videos.

I’m pretty excited at the idea because this isn’t the first time I’ve automated a YouTube channel.

I’ve create a couple nearly full self-operating channels in the past which is likely why I’m back here again, but those channels were faceless, no human content involved, so they were much better projects for full automation.

Unfortunately I’m putting myself in these tutorial videos so recording myself is a huge bottleneck, but no reason not to try to automate everything else around the recording process as much as possible.

Simple stuff like a script to generate all the folders needed to organize raw footage versus YouTube uploads is most likely where I’ll start, but I use a couple tools to clean up audio, so probably automate that step, and of course there’s a few ways to make the upload to YouTube process much smoother as well.

At the same time, I’ll probably be repurposing the YouTube videos into other posts on social media like Shorts and LinkedIn posts and blog posts.

Finally time to put all these pieces I’ve been talking about together into one personal brand content machine.

Hopefully by next month, I’ll have more content then I’ll know what to do with.

Communities

Cohorts and communities have been a hot trend for a little while now in the online entrepreneur space, and initially I was resistant to the idea.

Part of me really just wanted to live the automation dream of things happening in the background while I slept or hung out doing whatever I wanted to do, and money would magically show up.

No need to check on anything or manage anyone.

A completely free schedule.

I’m not the only one with that dream, there’s infinite content online with ideas on how to do that and I’m sure some actually work but I was having trouble finding one that worked for me.

Recently though, I realized that I don’t need a 100% free schedule, just the flexibility to manage my own schedule and work from wherever I want.

I also realized that I enjoy working with others and I enjoy teaching and helping.

Running a community about something I enjoy could actually make a lot of sense.

With a proper schedule and a little help, I think there’s a real opportunity to help others and build something valuable at the same time.

Since I enjoy learning and sharing what I’ve learned, an online community seems like the perfect place to do that, and it’s a great compliment to YouTube tutorials, providing a place to interact more directly, and consolidate resources and reference material.

So the plan is to create an automation community on skool.com next week.

I’m planning for it to be free, so if you don’t get enough of me with this newsletter, let me know if you want to join!

Otherwise I should have a link next week.

And that’s it for this week! The great shift from full-time app development to AI automation content.

Those are the links that stuck with me throughout the week and a glimpse into what I personally worked on.

If you want to start a newsletter like this on beehiiv and support me in the process, here’s my referral link: https://www.beehiiv.com/?via=jay-peters. Otherwise, let me know what you think at @jaypetersdotdev or email [email protected], I’d love to hear your feedback. Thanks for reading!
