Updates, Recaps, and What's a DevRel?

The Weekly Variable

The Weekly Variable

Each week I’ll have a curated list of links from the latest tech to just interesting reads or videos, as well as updates on my own entrepreneurial endeavors. Thanks for joining on this journey!

Topics for this week:

Streaming and Building

This week I kicked off my effort to build in public. My goal is to stream what I’m working on at least 4 times a week and I almost made it this week. If I stream tonight, then I’ll be right on target. I want to focus on coding, but I like the idea of recapping what I’m working on in general too.

I’ve dabbled in streaming on Twitch in the past so it was nice to have that experience to rely on to get things up and running quickly for this first week. Interestingly enough, Gary Vee had the same idea. Recently he also tested live streaming his work days. Might be on to something here…

The Career Console

I started this newsletter for fun and practice, but I’ve mentioned before that I would most likely do something a little more focused. I spent all Sunday working on names and checking domains and chatting with ChatGPT and finally came up with The Career Console. I’ll keep this newsletter going, but The Career Console will be a brand centered on helping developers early in their tech careers. If that sounds goods to you, you can sign up here! I updated my website to focus more on that aspect if you want to check it out there instead. Let me know what you think!

What’s a DevRel?

On to things not about me. While practicing being active on x.com, I ran across a term I’d never seen before: “DevRel”. Short for Developer Relations, I was very surprised to find an active Twitter space and newsletter on the topic, and even a website dedicated to that exact position, devrelcareers.com. It’s a great concept, essentially a more technical public relations position, balancing social media with coding. I would imagine it’s a position that will only grow in popularity, so it’s worth keeping an eye on in the future. Article below for the curious.

Hyperdimensional Computing

What a great term. Despite AI’s continual mind-blowing progress, for instance, this comparison of Midjourney 5.2 vs 6.0, limitations in computing power and resources will slow down or block progress eventually. Hyperdimensional computing aims to improve data processing even more than what’s currently optimized for training AI among other things. 2023’s Biggest Breakthrough’s in Computer Science recaps it much better than I can, as well as hitting 2 other big concepts, quantum cryptography and how throwing tons of data at AI causes new functionality to emerge. Highly recommend the 10 minute commitment:

The Importance of Writing

More and more I’m being reminded of the importance of writing, at least in the cycle of content I’ve been consuming anyway. It’s hard to deny the value of being able to turn your thoughts into words that are easily understood.

David Perell started a channel focusing specifically on that, with a series called “How I Write” where he interviews leaders of different areas about their writing. This week, he interviews Sahil Bloom whom I’ve referenced before, as he’s grown a Twitter following of 1 million plus in less than 2 years, and naturally he talks about how writing was at the heart of it.

One thing that stuck with me is Sahil’s working on a book right now, focused on writing about a topic he loves because if the book does well, he’ll have to talk about that topic for a really long time. It’s an interesting perspective I hadn’t heard before. Usually the focus is “what’s the next book?”, not how long will this one be around. The rest of the hour plus podcast is worth a listen if you have the time!

And that’s it for this week! Another newsletter, with a newsletter in it, and of course, some AI.

Those are the links that stuck with me throughout the week and a glimpse into what I personally worked on.

If you want to start a newsletter like this on beehiiv and support me in the process, here’s my referral link: https://www.beehiiv.com/?via=jay-peters. Otherwise, let me know what you think at @jaypetersdotdev or email [email protected], I’d love to hear your feedback. Thanks for reading!
